U.S. President Barack Obama has called for stricter background checks on gun buyers following a shooting rampage that killed 12 people at a U.S. Navy facility.
Aaron Alexis died after killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard on September 16.
He had been treated for mental problems and had previous gun-related run-ins with the law.
In an interview aired by the Spanish-language network Telemundo on September 17, Obama said: "The fact that we do not have a firm enough background check system is something that makes us more vulnerable to these kinds of mass shootings."
Obama vowed to make tougher gun laws a priority following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012 that killed 20 children and six adults, but Congress has rejected his proposals.
An employee with a Navy contractor, Alexis used a valid pass to get into the highly secured installation.
The U.S. Navy has ordered a review of security at all of its facilities.
