Nazi Death Camp Guard Demjanjuk's Body To Be Sent To U.S.

John Demjanjuk leaves the court after his verdict in Munich in May 2011.

The body of John Demjanjuk, who was convicted in Germany last year of crimes against humanity committed as a guard in a Nazi concentration camp, will be returned to the United States for burial.

The Ukraine-born Demjanjuk lived in the United States from 1952 until he was stripped of his citizenship in 2004 and extradited in 2009.

Demjanjuk died at the age of 91 on March 17.

In 2011 he was convicted as an accessory in the murders of 27,900 Jews who died at the Sobibor death camp during the time he was a guard there.

He was sentenced to five years in prison but released pending an appeal.

His family in the United States requested the return of Demjanjuk's body despite concerns that his burial site could become a focal point for neo-Nazis.
