New Egypt Parliament Opens Session

Egypt's newly elected parliament has opened its inaugural session.

The session, led by the oldest lawmaker, Mahmud el-Saqqah, began with a moment of silence for the hundreds of people killed in the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak nearly a year ago.

Among its first orders of business, the lower house was expected to elect a speaker -- presumably the nominee of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, which was the big winner in Egypt's first free vote in decades.

The party has vowed to guide Egypt in the transition to civilian rule after the military took charge.
