Protesters Gathering To Close A Major NATO Supply Route In Pakistan

Members of the Islamist party Jamat-e Islami protest in Peshawar against U.S. drone strikes and call for a blockade of NATO supplies on November 8.

Protesters are gathering in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province to close a major NATO supply route.

Thousands of supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e Islami political parties are gathering on November 23 on a major highway outside the provincial capital Peshawar to block NATO supplies.

The two parties, coalition partners in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's administration, have vowed to block NATO supplies to protest suspected U.S. drone strikes inside Pakistan.

Tehreek-e Insaf opposes Islamabad's alliance with Washington and claims that suspected U.S. drone strikes fuel terrorism inside Pakistan.

The country has been a major supply route for NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan during the past decade.

The closure of the northwestern route is expected to only partially shut NATO supplies because another route through the southwestern province of Balochistan is expected to remain open.
