BAKU -- U.S. President Barack Obama has welcomed the decision by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Armenian counterpart, Serzh Sarkisian, to meet later this month to renew discussions related to a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Obama made his comment in a letter to Aliyev that was reported in Azerbaijani media on November 8.
Obama stopped short of congratulating Aliyev, instead wishing him "all the best" as he starts his third term in office.
Obama expressed his readiness to continue discussions on strengthening the partnership between Washington and Baku.
Obama stressed in his letter that the mutual partnership between the two countries would achieve its "full potential" if Azerbaijan bolstered democratic reforms "to deepen respect for the universal freedoms of association, assembly, and expression; to promote political pluralism and judicial independence; and to strengthen the electoral system."
