A spokesman for Nawaz Sharif says the Pakistani Prime Minister will attend the inauguration of India's Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.

Mohyuddin Wani, the joint secretary of the Pakistani prime minister's office, confirmed on May 24 that Sharif had accepted the invitation to attend the ceremony.

It would mark the first time a Pakistani prime minister has attended an inauguration of a head of the Indian government.

Sharif has already sent Modi a letter of congratulations over his victory in the recent Indian elections.

The two countries have fought three wars since they both became independent in 1947.

The inauguration is scheduled for May 26.
