There were violent clashes between protesters and police in Karachi on August 2 as hundreds gathered to demand the return of or information about missing relatives. Human rights groups allege that the disappearances are a result of Pakistani intelligence agencies kidnapping people and leaving their families in the dark about their whereabouts and well-being. They say rallies demanding answers are routinely suppressed by the police.
