A nationwide electricity outage hit Pakistan on January 23, including its two largest cities, Karachi and Lahore. The hours-long outage, the second in the past two years, was caused by a fault in the national grid. "According to initial reports, the system frequency dropped at the national grid in the morning, which led to a massive breakdown," the Energy Ministry tweeted. "System maintenance work is progressing rapidly," it added. Limited power was later restored in parts of the capital, Islamabad, and the northwestern city of Peshawar.
