KARACHI, Pakistan -- Three police officers, including a senior police official, have been killed in a bomb attack in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.

The blast killed well-known police superintendent Chaudhry Aslam.

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility, saying the attack was in retaliation for the "cruelty shown against Taliban fighters in police custody" by Aslam.

At least two other policemen were killed and several injured. Images from Pakistani television showed that the powerful blast completely destroyed Aslam's bulletproof car.

Aslam, one of Pakistan's most respected police commanders, had survived at least three previous assassination attempts.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack, saying "these cowardly acts by terrorists cannot crush the will of the nation."
