Mamnoon Hussain has been sworn in as Pakistan's new president. The chief judge of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Chaudhry, administered the oath to Hussain at a ceremony in Islamabad.

Hussain's predecessor, Asif Ali Zardari, stepped down on September 8 after completing his five-year term, becoming the country's first democratically elected leader to serve a full term in office.

Zardari rose to power after the assassination of his wife, two-time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in a gun and bomb attack in 2007.

Pakistani lawmakers elected Hussain as president in July.

A textile businessman, he is a longtime member of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Muslim League-Nawaz party and served as governor of Sindh for several months in 1999.

Hussain lacks a personal power base and has not been a prominent figure in national politics.
