Imran Khan's Party Wins Karachi Re-Vote

The party of former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan has won a repeat election held in one constituency of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.

The new balloting came after Khan's Pakistan Movement for Justice party (PTI) complained bitterly of irregularities and fraud by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), long the dominant party in Karachi, in the first vote on May 11.

The May 19 process was held under tight security in 43 polling stations in the city's NA-250 constituency.

Unofficial results say PTI's Arif Alvi secured more than 77,000 votes, while the MQM candidate polled just over 30,000 votes.

The revote came a day after the killing of a PTI provincial vice president, Zahra Shahid Hussain, outside her Karachi home.

Imran Khan has blamed MQM for the killing, and specifically accused party head Altaf Hussain, who lives in exile in London.
