Pakistan Resumes Air Strikes Against Militants In North Waziristan

Internally displaced Pakistani residents fleeing military operations against Taliban insurgents in the country's North Waziristan tribal area arrive in the town of Bannu earlier this year.

Pakistani fighter jets resumed an offensive against militants in volatile North Waziristan on June 16.

Officials say around 20 militants were killed, but that figure cannot be independently confirmed.

Pakistan sent troops, artillery, and helicopter gunships to North Waziristan on June 15 in a military operation seen as a response to a deadly insurgent attack on the Karachi airport a week ago.

Pakistani military officials say Pakistani jets on June 15 bombed eight militant hideouts in North Waziristan, killing 105 "Uzbek militants," including a leader blamed for organizing the Karachi raid.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is due to address parliament later on June 16.

RFE/RL’s Radio Mashaal reports that more than 50,000 residents have been displaced from the tribal region amid the fighting.

The governor of Afghanistan’s neighboring Khost Province says a refugee camp there now hosts 10,000 people.
