The head of Pakistan's army says that it has broken the back of militants linked to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan.
General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said in a speech to army cadets in the northwestern town of Kakool that was broadcast on state television that "the terrorists' backbone has been broken and Inshallah [God willing] we will soon prevail."
The speech follows criticism from the United States that Islamabad wasn't doing enough to fight militancy.
"In the war against terrorism, our officers and soldiers have made great sacrifices and have achieved tremendous successes," Kayani said, though it was unclear on what basis he made the comments.
Washington said this month that Pakistan lacked a robust plan to defeat militants and that its intelligence agents were maintaining links with Afghan Taliban militants.
