Local government officials say two suicide bombers attacked a meeting of pro-government tribal elders in northwest Pakistan today, killing at least 40 people and injuring dozens.
The twin bombings took place in Ghalanai, the main town of Mohmand, one of several areas in Pakistan's tribal belt along the Afghan border.
Officials said one suicide bomber blew himself up inside the building where the meeting was taking place, while the second bomber detonated his explosives just outside the building. No one has so far claimed responsibility.
Taliban and Al-Qaeda members believed to be hiding in Pakistan's tribal belt in the past have carried out attacks targeting local officials and tribal elders allied to the government in Islamabad.
