The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed at least 34 people in northwest Pakistan today.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives at a funeral procession for the wife of an anti-Taliban militiamen.

Some 300 people were attending the funeral, near the city of Peshawar, when the bomber struck. At least 45 people were injured.

The Pakistani army has launched several offensives against the Taliban in the northwest, but has also encouraged the formation of tribal militias to help out in the fight. The militants have regularly targeted the militiamen who get state backing for taking on the insurgents.
