Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been arrested in a Manila hospital, where she was receiving medical treatment, on charges of electoral fraud.
The 64-year-old Arroyo is accused of fraud and corruption during her nine years in office in 2001-10.
Arroyo says the charges, which could see her imprisoned for life, are fabricated.
She tried to leave the country earlier this week allegedly to seek medical treatment abroad for a rare bone disease, but authorities prevented her from leaving.
The Supreme Court ruled she was free to travel, but the government ignored the order.
Politics in the Philippines is notorious for corruption.
Arroyo's predecessor, Joseph Estrada was jailed for corruption. He was later pardoned by Arroyo.
