Champagne And Stagnation: The 1980s In Russia

Final touches before a night out in 1980.

The U.S.S.R.'s Buran spaceplane being moved toward its launchpad in 1988. The craft had its maiden launch that year, successfully orbiting the Earth without a crew before being permanently grounded due to the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2002, Buran's storage hangar collapsed during a storm, killing eight workers and destroying the shuttle.

The Russian thrash-metal band Corrosion Of Metal a year after its 1988 album Order Of Satan was recorded. In 2016, band founder Sergei "Spider" Troitsky (center) was imprisoned in Montenegro for arson; but in March 2017 he claimed to have escaped prison and returned to Russia, where he plans to front the band once more.
