Podcast: Will The West Hack Back?

Will the West start hacking the hackers?

Don't look now, but the cyberwar may be under way.

After a series of what they said were Russian-backed hacking attacks -- most recently against the Democratic National Committee -- U.S. officials have indicated they may be prepared to launch retaliatory cyberstrikes against Moscow.

At this summer's summit in Warsaw, NATO defined cyberspace as an operational domain.

And this week, a massive data dump of compromising e-mails embarrassed a top Kremlin official said to be their author.

Russia has been using cyberattacks as an asymmetrical weapon against the West for years.

And now it appears, the West is preparing to strike back.

The Power Vertical Podcast goes on the road this week, visiting the Warsaw Security Forum and looking at the emerging cyberconflict between Russia and the West.

Joining me are Mark Galeotti, a senior research fellow at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, and author of the blog In Moscow's Shadows; and David Venable, a former intelligence officer for the U.S. National Security Agency and currently vice president of cybersecurity at Masergy.
