BAKU -- Police in Baku have forcibly dispersed an unsanctioned rally by the Public Chamber coalition of opposition parties and movements.

Dozens of opposition activists tried to gather on December 10 at central Baku's Square of the Fountains to mark Human Rights Day.

The gathering was not sanctioned by the city authorities, and police prevented the activists from entering the square. The activists chanted "Parliament! Step Down!"

They called the parliament illegitimate, alleging that vote fraud had violated their right to free and fair elections.

RFE/RL's correspondent on the scene reports that police and individuals in civilian clothes dispersed the gathering outside the square, arresting dozens.

According to opposition groups, some 80 protesters were detained.

Police have refused to comment on the situation.
