Russian investigators say a suspect has been charged with the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
A spokesman for the Investigative Committee, Vladimir Markin, said prosecutors had gathered sufficient evidence of Rustam Makhmudov's guilt.
"According to the investigation, it was Rustam Makhmudov who perpetrated the murder of 'Novaya gazeta' journalist Anna Politkovskaya," he said on June 2.
Politkovskaya, an investigative journalist known for her criticism of Russian human rights abuses in Chechnya, was gunned down in Moscow on October 7, 2006.
Makhmudov was arrested in his native Chechnya on May 31. The investigative committee said he is also suspected of committing abduction and extortion in Moscow in the 1990s.
Those who ordered Politkovskaya's murder have never been found in an investigation that has been widely criticized by rights groups and abroad.
