Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a bill making it illegal to post extremist calls online.
Under the new law, signed by Putin on June 30, public calls for extremist activities and inciting hatred or animosity through the distribution of extremist materials via the Internet can be punishable by up to five years in jail.
The vaguely worded law does not say what sort of materials are considered extremist, only that suspect materials will be added to the list of extremist materials in 30 days after authorities declare them as such.
Some Internet users in Russia say they fear that say that retweets, reposts, or "likes" on social networks could be legally defined as the distribution of extremist materials.
