The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, has called for sending troops from Arab nations to "stop the killing" in Syria.
Al-Thani's comments came in an interview with American network CBS program "60 Minutes," which is due to be broadcast later on January 14.
Al-Thani is the first Arab leader to call for Arab nations to send military forces to Syria to stop the violence that started some 10 months ago and has claimed, according to the UN, more than 5,000 lives.
The Arab League has sent observers to Syria to check on the Syrian government's pledges to halt violence against civilians.
But their presence has done little to stop the fighting and the monitors themselves are increasingly being criticized for failing to make any difference.
