The Romanian parliament on July 15 voted to more than double the quota of annual legal bear kills following a fatal bear attack on a 19-year-old woman in the Bucegi Mountains. The draft law provides a quota for the killing of 481 brown bears -- up from 220 in 2023 -- to prevent further attacks on people and property. The law relies on a 2021 ordinance that allows bears to be tranquilized, relocated, or shot when they endanger communities or come close to towns or villages.
