A daughter of the last king of Romania has appeared in U.S. court and pleaded not guilty to charges of helping run an illegal cockfighting business in the northwestern state of Oregon.
Princess Irina Walker was arraigned August 16 in Portland, Oregon, along with her American husband, John Walker.
They were later released, ahead of a trial expected later this year.
Irina Walker, 60, is the daughter of exiled former Romanian King Michael, who was forced to abdicate by communists in 1947.
She and her husband are among 18 people charged by U.S. prosecutors with organizing cockfighting contests in 2012 and 2013.
The charges include operating an illegal gambling business and violating animal protection laws.
In a statement on his website, exiled King Michael said he felt “deep sorrow” about the case.
