At least 50 people died in Russian pretrial detention centers, special detention centers, courts, police stations, and police cars last year, according to Next, a group that analyzed reports from government departments and the media. The group said in a report on January 31 that 22 people died while being held in a pretrial detention center, while another 14 died while being held in custody at a police station. Of those who died, the youngest victim was a 13-year-old boy from the Yakut village of Belaya Gora, who was brought home unconscious by police in the trunk of a car.
