Russian Lawmakers Approve Bill Raising Maximum Age For Mandatory Military Service To 30

After the bill is approved by the parliament's upper chamber and signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, Russian men between 18 and 30 years of age will be required to put in one year of mandatory military service as of January 1, 2024.

Russian parliament's lower chamber, the State Duma, on July 25 approved the final reading of a bill raising the maximum age for mandatory one-year military service for men to 30 from 27. Lawmaker Andrei Kartapolov said during the presentation of the bill for debate that was intended as a plan for "a big war" and "general mobilization." After the bill is approved by the parliament's upper chamber, the Federation Council, and signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, Russian men between 18 and 30 years of age will be required to put in one year of mandatory military service as of January 1, 2024.
