Russian investigators say they believe an armed group led by Chechen fighter Beslan Makhauri is behind several violent incidents that took place along the administrative border between Russia's North Caucasus republics of Ingushetia and Chechnya on September 16.
In Ingushetia's Sunzhen district, three policemen were wounded when a gunfight erupted after the police tried to detain several suspects at a security checkpoint.
The suspects' vehicle exploded during the exchange of gunfire. Police said the blast was the result of explosions that had been stored in the car.
In a separate incident in the same area, a man wearing a suicide belt lined with explosives was detained by guards before he could detonate it.
Across the border in Chechnya's Sunzhen district, three police officers were killed and four injured in a suicide car bombing.
