Russia's Investigative Committee said on August 6 that another former Defense Ministry official has been arrested on corruption charges amid an ongoing crackdown on defense officials. Vladimir Demchik, former chief of the ministry's property department, is suspected of accepting 4 million rubles ($46,900) as a bribe to secure ministry contracts with a private business in 2017. Several other top military and Defense Ministry officials have been arrested on corruption charges before and since President Vladimir Putin dismissed his longtime ally, Sergei Shoigu, as defense minister in mid-May.
