A court in Russia's Far East said on January 11 that it had handed a mitigated prison sentence of seven years to a man convicted on a murder charge because the defendant had fought in the war against Ukraine. Maksim Volkovoi was serving an eight-year sentence for murder when he was recruited from prison to join the war. His sentenced was annulled following his tour of duty. After returning from the war, Volkovoi celebrated for several days at a friend's house, where one guest criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which sparked a brawl.
