Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for direct peace talks between the Ukrainian government and Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Putin made the comment after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Sochi on May 2. Merkel said peace talks should only happen if elections were held to produce a "legitimate leadership" in areas of Ukraine currently under separatist control. (Reuters)
