Russia Loses Out On Reelection To UN Rights Council

Russia has lost out in its bid to remain on the United Nations Human Rights Council after an outcry by dozens of nongovernmental organizations.

Hungary and Croatia beat out Russia in the vote by the 193-member UN General Assembly on October 28.

In the weeks leading up to the vote, some 80 human rights organizations had urged UN members to consider whether Russia's ongoing military campaign in Syria might disqualify it from serving on the 47-member council based in Geneva.

There was no immediate reaction from Moscow to the October 28 vote.

Earlier in the week, however, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the organizations should have done more to prevent "atrocities that have been committed by militants and terrorists in Syria over the past several years."
