Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAK) said two alleged militants were killed in a "counterterrorism" operation that started on April 11 in the North Caucasus. Russian law enforcement officers had received information about the “location of armed individuals involved in terrorist activities” in a community in the suburbs of Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria. The two allegedly opened fire on Russian security forces after refusing to surrender and were shot dead, the NAK said in a statement. The incident came a month after more than 140 people were killed in an attack claimed by the Islamic State extremist group outside Moscow.
