The Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow "will not leave unanswered" Chisinau's decision to align with a package of European Union sanctions against Russia. Moldovan authorities in recent days joined the largest package of European sanctions against Russia in the face of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, targeting hundreds of people, including those from Moldova or who have worked in the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transdniester on its eastern border.
