A coalition of Russian opposition activists has applied to the Moscow authorities for permission to hold a mass demonstration in the capital on March 1.
An official with the opposition Solidarity movement made the announcement on February 16, adding that under Russian law the authorities have three days to respond to the application.
The planned protest march through the center of the city is being organized by leading opposition figures including anticorruption blogger Aleksei Navalny, former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov, former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, and formerly jailed tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
It is intended to protest the war in Ukraine, corruption, and the worsening state of the Russian economy.
On February 15, Navalny was held in a Moscow subway station by police for several hours for distributing leaflets announcing the protest.
