Investigation Launched Into Russian Pensioner's Death In Custody

Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the case of an 81-year-old woman who died at a police station on February 3 after being detained on suspicion of trying to steal three packs of butter from a supermarket.

The investigative Committee’s spokesman, Vladimir Markin, on February 5 described the case as an investigation into an "unintentional infliction of death."

St. Petersburg’s prosecutors said on February 5 that security camera video from the supermarket showed the woman at a checkout counter, apparently trying to pay, but was unable to do so because her hands were shaking.

They said there was no evidence to support accusations from the store's security that the woman intended to steal the butter.

The pensioner, identified as Rauza Galimova, had complained of feeling unwell just before she died at the police station in Kronstadt, a port town close to St. Petersburg.
