The Supreme Court of Russia's Mari El Republic ruled on August 21 to shut down the Man and the Law rights group citing the nongovernmental organization’s 'involvement in political activities." The group’s members say they will appeal the decision. Man and the Law has operated in the republic in Russia's Volga region since 1999. It has provided legal assistance to victims of police brutality and other illegal actions by law enforcement officers. In 2020, the Justice Ministry’s request to shut down the group was rejected by a court. The Justice Ministry added the group to its list of “foreign agents" in 2014.
