The food quality control agency on Russia's eastern Sakhalin Island is warning residents to be on the watch for "dangerous chicken meat" produced in the United States that might end up for sale in local stores.
The local branch of Rosselkhoznadzor, Russia's agricultural watchdog, said on December 29 that it had earlier impounded some three tons of chicken meat discovered in boxes marked as calamari at the port of Kholm.
The company Linkar imported the meat. Imports of chicken from the United States are banned in Russia.
Inspectors believed the meat originated in the United States and determined that it was unfit for consumption.
However, when the chicken meat was being transferred a vehicle cut off the inspector's car and the truck carrying the chicken sped off.
Local authorities have been unable to locate the vehicle or its contents.
