Two Uzbek Women Arrested In Russia For Attempt To Sell Baby

Two Uzbek women have been arrested in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on charges of attempting to sell a newborn child.

The city prosecutor's office said on February 25 that Maftuna Yusupova, 24, and her mother, Rokhilakhon Yusupova, 50, had been sent to two months of pretrial detention.

Investigators say Maftuna Yusupova gave birth to a child on February 18 and found a potential buyer for the baby with the help of her mother.

The child was then sold for 80,000 rubles ($2,250) to an undercover police officer on February 21.

The women were arrested immediately.
