Russian President Vladimir Putin has handed over the mantle of World Cup host to the emir of Qatar, whose country will stage the 2022 edition of the tournament. At a Kremlin ceremony on July 15, Putin handed an official World Cup soccer ball to Gianni Infantino, the president of world soccer's governing body, FIFA. He then passed it on to emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. This year's championship in Russia was due to end later the same day with France and Croatia contesting the final.
