UNITED NATIONS -- Russia has exercised its veto against a Security Council resolution on the recent controversial presidential elections in Cote d'Ivoire.
The resolution would have recognized Alassane Quattara as the winner over incumbent Laurent Gbagbo.
Much of the international community -- including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon -- has recognized Quattara as the winner.
Explaining the action, Russian diplomats said they needed to consult with officials in Moscow.
UN diplomats told an RFE/RL correspondent that Russia objects to the UN validating election results.
