SAMARA, Russia -- Police in the Russian city of Samara have detained more than 100 young people as part of a sweep in several cities aimed at preventing ethnic clashes, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
The December 15 police action was centered on Moscow, where police detained more than 1,000 youths to prevent renewed fighting following the death of a football fan.
In Samara, in the Volga region, police detained more than 100 people as hundreds of young men who identified themselves as fans of the Krylya Sovetov (Wings of the Soviets) soccer team gathered on the city's Leningrad Street. The municipal authorities deployed hundreds of police to prevent possible disorders.
