U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul says the top priorities for U.S.-Russian cooperation in 2014 are Iran, Syria, and Afghanistan.
In an interview with the Russian daily "Kommersant," which was published on December 24.
McFaul said Iran "occupies first place" and that U.S.-Russia cooperation in the first months of the year will play "a key role" if a breakthrough on Iran's disputed nuclear program is to be achieved.
He said that U.S. President Barack Obama could meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in The Hague in March if Putin attends the Nuclear Security Summit.
Otherwise, McFaul expects the presidents to meet in June on the sidelines of the G8 summit in Sochi.
McFaul also said Washington believes missile defense is a potentially fruitful area for bilateral cooperation.
