Police in Russia's northwestern region of Karelia detained blogger Aleksei Trunov for unknown reasons after searching his home on August 5. Trunov had planned to attend an event that day to commemorate thousands of victims of the Soviets' "Great Purge" campaign who are buried in Karelia's Sandarmokh area. In February, Trunov was convicted of discrediting Russia's military over online comments condemning the war in Ukraine and ordered to pay a fine.
