An opposition movement held a weekly protest in front of Serbia’s presidential office in the capital on August 17 calling for President Aleksandar Vucic's resignation. In reaction to criticism over the rough handling of demonstrators the previous Saturday, Vucic kept his promise to remove physical barriers and replace male security guards with female. The anti-government rallies began in December after leftist opposition leader Borko Stefanovic was beaten up by masked attackers in central Serbia before a televised political debate.
