Serbia and Kosovo have exchanged official representatives for the first time since the 1998-99 war in Kosovo and the region's subseqent declaration of independence from Serbia.

The officials, dubbed liaison officers, Serbian Dejan Pavicevic and Kosovan Lulzim Peci, both took up their posts at the European Union's missions in Belgrade and Pristina at midday on June 17.

Their task will be to help monitor the implementation of an EU-brokered agreement on normalizing ties.

The EU's top diplomat, Catherine Ashton, has welcomed the move.

"This is another concrete achievement in the context of implementation and an important step towards normalization of relations," Ashton said in Brussels.

Implementing the agreement on normalizing ties is key for both Belgrade and Pristina to make progress toward closer ties with the European Union.
