Slovakia's Prime Minister Injured In Shooting

A suspect is detained after a shooting incident involving Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at a Slovak government meeting in Handlova, Slovakia, on May 15. Fico, who was injured, was rushed to a local hospital.

A Slovak TV station, said that Fico, 59, was hit in the stomach after four shots were fired outside the city's House of Culture.

A reporter for the daily newspaper Dennik N heard the shooting and then saw rescuers carrying the premier to a car.

A suspect was quickly apprehended.

The deputy speaker of parliament, Lubos Blaha, confirmed the incident during a parliamentary session and adjourned it until further notice, the Slovak TASR news agency said.

President Zuzana Caputova condemned “a brutal and ruthless” attack on the premier.

“I’m shocked,” Caputova said. “I wish Robert Fico a lot of strength in this critical moment and a quick recovery from this attack.”

Media reports say Slovakia’s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, was injured in a shooting and taken to the hospital. The incident took place in the town of Handlova, some 150 kilometers northeast of the capital, according to the news television station TA3.
