Son Of Slain Afghan Ex-President Named To Replace Him Atop Peace Council

Afghanistan's government has appointed Salahuddin Rabbani, the son of slain peace jirga chief and former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani to replace his father in that peace council's leadership post.

A statement from the office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai office said that the 70-plus members of the Afghan High Peace Council, which is tasked with reaching out to Taliban insurgents, elected Salahuddin Rabbani to lead the group.

Salahuddin Rabbani is currently Afghanistan's ambassador to Turkey.

Former President Rabbani was assassinated in his home in September by an insurgent carrying a hidden bomb.

The suicide bomber posed as a peace emissary from the Taliban.
