South African African President Jacob Zuma says Nobel Peace Prize-laureate Nelson Mandela "remains critical but is now stable."
Zuma said that Mandela is "much better" than last night.
After visiting her 94-year-old father in a Pretoria hospital, Mandela's daughter Makaziwe said earlier on June 27: "I won't lie. It doesn't look good."
But she said Mandela is "still there" and responding to touch.
Emotional crowds continued to gather outside the hospital.
The former president was taken to hospital earlier this month with a lung infection.
His health has worsened since June 23.
Jailed for 27 years for his struggle against apartheid, Mandela emerged in 1990 to become South Africa's first black president four years later.
In Senegal on June 27, U.S. President Barack Obama called Mandela a "hero for the world."
