The Spanish Foreign Ministry says Spain and Russia have expelled each other's diplomats in a tit-for-tat move.
The ministry said two Russian diplomats were expelled a month ago for "activities incompatible with their status" -- a phrase usually taken to mean involvement in spying activities.
It said Russia then responded by expelling two Spanish diplomats.
The ministry said both governments considered the incident resolved and that a scheduled visit to Moscow by Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez on January 17 will take place as planned.
In February, a Spanish intelligence agent was jailed for trying to sell secret documents to Russia, in a rare treason conviction.
Britain said last week it had expelled a Russian diplomat suspected of spying and that Russia had responded in kind.
