Spain's Prime Minister Calls Early Elections

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has called new general elections in November, four months earlier than planned.

Zapatero announced on July 29 that the election will be held on November 20.

He has come under increasing pressure from opposition conservatives who accuse him of allowing the economy to deteriorate, and many from within his own Socialist Party have also been calling for a snap election which they believe would be beneficial for their organization.

Zapatero announced earlier this year that he would not seek a third term.
